Planned Absence of 5 Days or Longer -- Independent Study Contract:

When a student is out for five or more days, with advance notice, we can make an independent study contract that can cover the student's attendance and academics. You should inform the teacher of the absence and contact the school office at least two weeks in advance. The parent, student, and teacher all must sign the contract before the leave occurs. The student must return all of the work that was assigned by the teacher on the date of return, completed in full, or the student may not receive credit.

Early release of students:

Parents who wish to dismiss their children prior to school dismissal must sign a Permission to Leave School Grounds Early slip in the office. Teachers will not release students without this slip. Students will only be released to an adult with identification whose name is listed on the elementary student data form. This is for your child's safety, and there are no exceptions to this policy.

Students Not Picked Up:

When students are not picked after school dismissal, they can become fearful and anxious. Additionally, the school is not staffed for student supervision after 2:15 pm. Please contact the office in the case of an emergency that will prevent you from picking up your child in a timely fashion. If we cannot reach you or any of the emergency contacts on file, we may have to contact social services/school police for assistance.

PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD ATTEND SCHOOL DAILY. If your child must be absent, please call the office as early as possible at (858)987-5100, Extension 3021. You may leave a message before school hours, if needed, with the following information: 1) your child's name, 2) room number or teacher, and 3) detailed reason for absence. You may also send a note with the same information when your child returns to school. The best way to ensure your child's success is regular attendance at school. Students who are not at school also miss learning fundamentals, reading and math skills, which can lead to academic issues.

State law places the responsibility for regular attendance upon parents/guardians, and we appreciate your cooperation with this responsibility. Parents/guardians will be contacted if their child has recurrent absences. It is important that parents/guardians and students understand the following State and District guidelines. The school office must be called or a note given to clear an absence. Any absence not verified by a parent/guardian within 5 days will be marked as an unexcused absence.

Excused Absence: Absences or tardies are considered excused only for the following reasons:

  • Illness such as vomiting, high fever, cough, cold, flu or contagious disease
  • Medical/dental appointments
  • Court appearances requiring student's presence
  • Attending the funeral of an immediate family member (parent, grandparent, sibling or family member residing in the home)
  • Religious Observance

Tardy: A student is considered late to school if they are not in the classroom at the 7:45 start time. The student must go to the office and get a tardy slip to class. The teacher will not let the student into class without a tardy slip. A student coming to school late after an early morning appointment should go to the office for a tardy slip.

Medical/Dental Appointments: Please try to schedule medical/dental appointments on our minimum day, Thursday, or before or after school hours to avoid missed instruction time.

Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence or tardy is recorded for reasons other than those listed above. The following are examples of unexcused absences: going out of town, traffic, and family celebrations.

Independent Study Contract: Students who will be absent for 5 days or more, due to unavoidable reasons, should request an Independent Student Contract from the Attendance/Office at least 2 weeks prior to the absence. All assignments provided by the teacher must be completed and given to the student's teacher by the date of return to school for class credit or the absences will be unexcused.

Excessive Absences/Truancy: Excessive absences due to illness may require a doctor's note in order to be excused.

Truancies are defined as follows: Absences by a student from school without a valid excuse for three (3) full days in a school year, or tardies or absences without a valid excuse of (30) minutes on each of three occasions in one school year (Education Code Section 48260). Truant students may be referred to the District's School Attendance Review Board (SARB).
